Reuven Rothman,Double Bass

Growing up in Toronto, Reuven Rothman’s early technical formation at the University of Toronto came, via teachers Tom Monohan and Alan Molitz, through the school that traces its roots to Anton Torello, Roger Scott, and Oscar Zimmerman, all founding fathers of North American double bass playing. Meanwhile, study and application of source texts in period performance practice from the 17th and 18th century led to further growth in that area, at first academically, and later professionally. After experiences both at McGill University and the Conservatoire de Québec à Montréal, Rothman began to work with ensembles from Montréal, Toronto, Ottawa, and Windsor (Ontario). Now residing in Montréal, frequent collaborations include the Theatre of Early Music, led by countertenor Daniel Taylor; the Montréal Symphony Orchestra; Toronto’s Canadian Opera Company, Aradia ensemble, and Toronto Chamber Orchestra; the Ottawa Bach Choir; and the Windsor Symphony Orchestra. Married to Stéphanie Bozzini, violist of Montréal’s new-music ensemble Quatuor Bozzini, their family also includes sons Joshua and Mathis.
